  Flooded River Breaches Dyke in Sout...
  The flooded Fu River in China's Jiangxi Province burst through a protective embankment on Monday, as heavy rains battered much of the region. Nearly 145000 residents are under threat and 40000 residents have been evacuated. Sixty thousand residents still remain trapped. Heavy rain across much of southern China over the last week has killed at least 175 people and left 107 missing, as rivers broke their banks and landslides severed road and rail links. The downpours have triggered flash floods, submerged crops, disrupted traffic and telecommunications, forcing the evacuation of more than 1.7 million people. Many of these displaced people live on low-lying land next to rivers that has been cleared by building dykes. When threatened by floods, they are often moved to higher ground nearby. The worst hit were the provinces and regions of Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangdong, Sichuan, Guizhou and Guangxi. More downpours are expected in the region in the coming days.

  April 9, 2010 - UPDATE April 15, 2010. Moscow has officially halted all adoptions to the US after little 7 year old Artyem Savilev was sent back to Russia on a plane alone with an expired passport with only a note saying he was no longer wanted by his US adoptive family. All adoptions have been officially suspended until an agreement is signed between the two countries to improve the regulation of such cases. This was the final straw in a string of cases of Russian children adopted in the US who were are now dead. Just a few cases include: - Masha Allen (Mariya Nikolaevna Yashenkova) adopted in 1998 at age of 5 from Russia into the US by a single male pedophile from Pittsburg PA, Matthew Mancuso. Masha was sexually abused for 5 years and the subject of child pornography. In 2006 she testified before the House Energy and Commerce Committy.   Fiber Painting On a Drum Card...
  If you want to add some color to your yarn, but just want a hint of it here and there I do what I call "fiber painting" on the drum card. In the video I use only a hint of several colors, but you can use lots of colors for a bold effect, one color, two colors - the sky is the limit and your imagination should be able to run wild. I am preparing this lovely soft Polworth fleece to use for a baby sweater, so I want the colors to be muted and soft - I'm using very little "paint" on my batts, and then blending it again to mute it even more. If you want the colors to remain brighter and bolder start with bright colors and do not recard after you paint them on. To do this your batt must be well carded before you run it through the carder the final time to "paint" it. Because I want to have a good 4 oz of yarn I need two full batts. I randomly add color to each batt, but then divide the batts and combine half of one with half of the other - this even out the colors. To further even things out I'll spin each batt separately and then ply the two balls together. Don't limit yourself to painting with the same fiber you have in your batt - feel free to branch out and use silk, different kinds of wool, mohair, angora, or any or the man made "silks" that are available. It's also a lot of fun to add color to colored fleeces - I did a super hat in jet black alpaca with just hints of bright colors dabbed in like "jewels" shining through the black. I used it for a hat.
