Move over MRSA. A new superbug is popping up in hospitals across the country. It’s called C.Diff and it’s spreading through hospitals and health care facilities, and it’s proving to be more aggressive than the MRSA bug. The editorial was authored by Robert P. Gaynes, MD, associate professor of medicine (infectious diseases) at Emory University School of Medicine and a physician at the Atlanta Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Background Indiscriminate use of antibiotics has led to a global crisis in antibiotic resistance, and clinicians must understand the urgency of appropriate usage, according to an editorial in this week's Journal of the American Medical Association -- JAMA. Linezolid is used to treat a variety of bacteria, including methiciliin-resistant S aureus (MRSA). Clinicians have not learned from previous issues with antibiotic resistance, and it is essential that they take the problem seriously, Gaynes says.
